Frequently asked questions

At Great River Air, we’re committed to safety, flexibility, and warm northern hospitality. Here are some of the most common questions we get from travelers. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.

Booking & Flights

  • How do I book a flight?

You can book by calling or emailing us directly. Online booking will be available soon. We recommend reaching out early to secure your preferred time and date.

  • When is the best time of day to fly?

We recommend late morning flights to avoid early morning fog and afternoon thunderstorms. We operate between 9 AM and 9 PM, and midnight sun tours may be available in summer—ask us!

  • How far can you fly?

Our standard scenic flights are about 1 hour, but we offer longer custom routes. Please note that the farther we fly, the more fuel is required, which may reduce the number of passengers or amount of gear we can safely carry.

  • What kind of aircraft do you fly?

We operate safe, well-maintained small aircraft designed for northern flying and sightseeing. Aircraft may vary depending on group size or tour type.

  • Will I have a window seat?

Yes—every seat has a window view for maximum sightseeing and photography.

  • Can I customize my flight?

Absolutely! We can tailor the route to your interests. Additional charges may apply for extended flight time.

  • Do you offer custom tours?

Yes! We frequently fly custom tours to destinations like Old Crow, the Arctic Coast, Fort Selkirk, Whitehorse, and more. Contact us to design your ideal flight.

Passengers & Accessibility

  • How many people can fly?

We can accommodate 1 to 5 passengers, with pricing based on aircraft time, not per seat. Perfect for couples, families, and small groups.

  • Is there a weight limit?

Yes—our aircraft can carry up to 1,000 lbs total, subject to balance and safety restrictions. Please contact us if your group is close to this limit.

  • Are there age restrictions?

There’s no upper age limit. Children over 2 years must occupy their own seat per Transport Canada regulations.

  • Are your flights accessible for people with disabilities?

We do our best to accommodate all guests, but some disabilities may not be compatible with small aircraft. Please contact us to discuss your needs—we’re here to help.

  • Will I get motion sickness?

Most guests enjoy a smooth ride, but some turbulence is possible. If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider taking precautions beforehand and let us know so we can support you.

Before Your Flight

  • What should I wear?

In summer, no special clothing is required—just dress comfortably. That said, we recommend wearing outdoor-appropriate clothing, as you would for any remote adventure.

  • What should I bring with me?

A camera, sunglasses, and your sense of adventure! All seats are window seats, and photography is encouraged.

  • Can I bring a camera or phone on board?

Yes! Just be sure to secure your device and follow crew instructions during boarding and landing.

  • When should I arrive?

Please check in 15 minutes before your scheduled flight at the Dawson City Airport Terminal. Contact us the day before your flight to confirm weather conditions.

Payment, Policies & Cancellations

  • When do I pay?

Payment is currently taken after your flight, and we accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, and debit. Tipping is appreciated and available via the card terminal.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

We do not require a deposit, and there is no penalty for cancellation. We understand that plans and weather can change—and we aim to be as flexible as possible.

  • What happens in bad weather?

If poor weather prevents your flight, there’s no charge to cancel or reschedule. If a flight departs but returns early for safety, we’re unable to offer refunds.

  • Do you offer tours in winter?

Not at this time. Our season runs during the warmer months, when conditions are safest for sightseeing.

  • Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes! Gift certificates are valid until September 30 of the year they’re issued. They are non-refundable and have no cash value, but they may be transferred by contacting us.

Other Common questions

  • Do you offer a referral program?

Not yet—but we love when you share your experience! If you have feedback or suggestions, we’d love to hear them.

  • Can I fly with my dog?

While we do not allow pets on scenic flights, we may be able to accommodate them on custom charters. Contact us to discuss.

  • Can I share photos from my flight with you?

Yes, please! Email them to us or tag us on social media @greatriverair — we love seeing your aerial adventures!
